Towering forests, sea marshes and the ruins and sights of a pre-civil war cotton plantation are the setting at the Sea Island Golf Club. Many modifications to Sea Island have been made since Access Software first made this course -- the course represented here is a combination of the original 9 holes from the Seaside Course and the original 9 holes from the Retreat Course.
Course Information
Course designed by
H. S. Colt and Charles Alison in 1929 & Dick Wilson in 1967
Sea Island's golf courses have gone through numerous additions and re-designs over the past 70 years, from architects that included: Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Dick Wilson, Joe Lee, Rees Jones, and finally, Tom Fazio.
The ruins of the old slave hospital and plantation cemetery can still be seen near the club's golf center, a few steps from the club house. Also nearby is a small cemetery that is still used by the descendants of slaves who worked in the cotton fields of the Retreat Plantation.
"Here you will find a wealth of romance and history to charm your mind while nature mends your jaded nerves." --
Howard Coffin, original owner and builder of the Sea Island resort, as part of a letter to members of the Detroit Athletic Club, in January of 1931.
