This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

A Centerville company gives golfers a longer drive than they ever could have imagined.

With TruGolf's remarkable golf simulator, a person can hit a ball from home and watch it land on the green in Pebble Beach, Calif., or St. Andrews, Scotland.

TruGolf installs indoor home resorts throughout North America. The simulators allow golf enthusiasts to try their swing at any one of 60 premier golf courses. When the golf ball hits the 9-by-12-foot screen, sensors measure the ball's position and acceleration. The ball then continues to sail through the detailed on-screen course, accurately recreated with topography maps and a GPS.

TruGolf partner David Ashby tells me the simulator is so accurate, the golf ball will follow the exact contours of the golf course's fairway and travel the same distance as if a person were actually on the course.

I was even more impressed to learn about the many functions of TruGolf's home resort — it can also be used for fitness, gaming or as a home theater. For example, a person can pedal along the route of the Tour de France or jog along a country path using a treadmill or his own cycling bike.

David tells me TruGolf was started in 1995 to support Utah software company Access Software. Microsoft purchased Access Software in 1999, but TruGolf remained in the hands of its local owners. Today, Roger Carver, Chris Jones, Steve Johnson and David Ashby own the Centerville company.

David tells me that through the years, technology has allowed TruGolf to perfect its simulator to become more precise and to provide a more realistic experience.

TruGolf has used its skill and drive to score big in the home-entertainment market, as well as appearing in a number of commercial settings.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
